Fire kills 2, displaces 203 families in Davao City
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 14 July) – Two children were killed while another person was injured in a fire that broke out in the downtown area on Saturday night.
According to initial investigation, at least 150 houses mostly made of light materials, were destroyed, displacing at least 203 families or 545 individuals who are now temporarily seeking shelter at Magallanes Elementary School.
A report released by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Davao City Fire District on Sunday said firefighters from different stations in the city were immediately deployed to Purok 2 in Barangay 2-A, near Pichon St. (formerly Magallanes), at 8:25 p.m. on Saturday.
The fire reached third alarm before it was put under control around 11 p.m. and extinguished at 1:05 a.m., according to the report.
Authorities, however, are still investigating the cause of fire.
The damages were estimated at P2.25 million.
Capt. Hazel Tuazon, spokesperson for Davao City Police Office, said the fire started at the residence of Charlene Puerto Lopez.
The victims were identified as Lopez’ son, Rjay, 11 and cousin Roy Reteza, 14, both of them with autism spectrum disorder.
The victims’ parents informed the fire responders that their children were missing.
During the search and rescue operation, the firemen saw the victims inside the comfort room of their house.
