Comelec withdraws DQ case vs CDO House aspirant
CAGAYAN DE ORO (MindaNews / 21 December) — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has withdrawn the disqualification case against Raineir Joaquin “Kikang “ Uy, son of Cagayan de Oro Mayor Rolando Uy who is running for the first congressional district here in the May 2025 elections.
The Comelec legal department filed the motion to withdraw last Wednesday, saying it has received new evidence that required a re-assessment of the case they have filed against Uy.
The three-page motion was signed by Comelec lawyers Albert Leonard Rodriguez, Maria Norina Tangaro-Casingal and Persis del Camat-Dabalos.
The Comelec, acting on a privilege speech by Rep. Lordan Suan (1st district, Cagayan de Oro) filed a disqualification case against Uy, village chair of Barangay Carmen.
Uy lost to Suan when he ran for the same post in 2022.
Suan alleged that the number of voters in the first district sharply increased based on the figure during the 2023 barangay election.
He said this happened after Uy issued certificates of residency without verifying if the people who were given those certificates are indeed residents of Barangay Carmen.
“The Comelec has no evidence against our client and we were able to prove that,” Angie Carrasco-Geneso, legal counsel for Uy, said.
She said they were able to prove that the increase in the number of voters in Barangay Carmen was due to urban migration. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
