‘Rough section’ of Davao coastal road blamed in death of motorbike rider
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews / 18 Dec) – An uneven road surface along the Davao City Coastal Road caused an early morning accident that took the life of a 20-year-old man on Tuesday.
According to a spot report from the Davao City Police Office sent to media Tuesday morning, the incident happened around 3:40 a.m. where a certain Kharyl Brigole Sevilla, a resident of Dahlia St. Riverside, Toril in this city, was driving a motorcycle with no plate heading towards Barangay Toril.
The police report said Sevilla was not carrying a driver’s license at the time of the crash.
Cpt. Hazel Tuazon, DCPO spokesperson, said that initial investigations stated that the victim was riding alone and, unfortunately, lost control as he was navigating a particularly “rough section” of the road.
The coordinates indicated in the spot report would reveal that the accident happened near NHA Bangkal.
Tuazon added that Sevilla lost control of his motorcycle due to the uneven road surface near the connector bridge, causing his bike to veer off the road. He sustained serious physical injuries and was pronounced already dead by a physician when he was brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center at 4:10 a.m. His body was later retrieved by Villa-Gan Funeral Service with the consent of his co-workers.
Tuazon said the motorcycle has been brought to the DCPO for safekeeping and further investigation.
Asked for comments on how the Department of Public Works and Highways- Region 11 (DPWH-11) addressed the uneven portion of the road, spokesperson Dean Ortiz told MindaNews Wednesday morning they have “yet to check” the area.
“It is an isolated case and we are looking into this matter,” Ortiz told MindaNews over Messenger.
This is not the first time accidents have happened on the coastal road.
The DCPO have reported two separate accidents, on Sept. 28 and Dec. 12, when speeding motorcycles hit the gutters by the roadside. The drivers died on both occasions.
The 8-kilometer first segment of the P33.8-billion Davao City Coastal Road Project was opened to the public on July 1, 2023, according to the DPWH-11.
The DPWH-11 said the project, which “aims to promote suburban development and to decongest the city center,” is one of the identified major road projects under the Infrastructure Modernization for Davao “to strengthen the road network of the city to meet traffic demand.” (Ian Carl Espinosa / MindaNews)
