3 killed, 6 wounded in gun attacks targeting ‘Tanods’ in Maguindanao del Sur
COTABATO CITY (MindaNews / 28 Jan)—Riding-in-tandem gunmen have once again attacked in the town of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, killing three barangay tanods in separate incidents, police said in a radio interview.
The latest incident occurred at 7:35 p.m. Monday in Barangay Labu-Labu, Shariff Aguak, resulting in two deaths and three injuries, said Col. Ryan Bobby Paloma, provincial police director of Maguindanao del Sur, when interviewed over DXMS’ Radyo Bida.
He identified the two fatalities as Hassen Kumamo, a 17-year-old BPAT member, and Esmail Singh, 20, married. Those injured were an alias Ali, 17; Anwar Banalan, 20; and Mohamad Hussain, 30.
The shooting occurred while the BPAT members were on duty when armed men on motorcycles suddenly opened fire on them, police said.
Just last Jan. 23, a BPAT member named Rasid Kamid was also killed. One of his companions, identified as Paisal Guimblang, and an unnamed civilian were shot by riding-in-tandem suspects. The victims were on guard duty at a post in the poblacion.
The town of Shariff Aguak is one of the areas being closely watched by the Commission on Elections for the upcoming elections.
During the filing of candidacy October last year, violence and an exchange of gunfire erupted between supporters of rival political groups, resulting in casualties and injuries on both sides.
Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad “Mitra” Ampatuan has condemned the series of attacks and vowed to push justice for the victims. (Ferdinandh Cabrera / MindaNews)
