CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao del Norte (MindaNews / 25 January) – Brig. Gen. Donald Gumiran assumed Saturday as commander of the 6th Infantry “Kampilan” Division here, replacing Lt. General Antonio Nafarrete, who was promoted as commander of the Western Mindanao Command.

Gumiran was commander of the Army’s 602nd Infantry Brigade based in North Cotabato before his new assignment.

Under his leadership, dozens of members of the ISIS-linked Dawlah Islamiyah and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters surrendered. He partnered with various local government units and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in encouraging the alleged terrorists to return to the folds of the law.

Gumiran’s military career has been marked by leadership roles in various units, including the 7th Infantry Battalion, 38th Infantry Battalion, and the 6th Infantry Division Training School before he headed the 602nd Infantry Brigade in North Cotabato for two years.

A native of Cabagan, Isabela, he is a member of Philippine Military Academy “Banyuhay” Class of 2002.

Gumiran holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the Army War College in the United States.

He will be the key military security official to supervise the 2025 midterm national and local elections and the first BARMM parliamentary elections. However, there are efforts in Congress to postpone the Bangsamoro regional elections. (Ferdinandh Cabrera / MindaNews)
