Another quake rocks Mindanao
TANDAG CITY (MindaNews / 20 January) — After the earthquake off Sultan Kudarat province Tuesday morning, another temblor rocked the eastern side of Mindanao in the afternoon.
According to the updated Earthquake Information No. 2 issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the Magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck at the coordinates 08.99°N, 126.22°E, or “007 km N 71° W of Bayabas (Surigao Del Sur).”
Plotting the coordinates, however, indicate that the epicenter of the 2:43 p.m. quake was within the boundary of neighboring Tago municipality.
PHIVOLCS, in its earlier dispatch, reported that the epicenter was at seven kilometers off the coast of Bayabas.
PHIVOLCS reported the quake had a depth of focus of 24 kilometers, of tectonic origin caused by the movement of faults within the Earth’s crust.
According to Bayabas Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Officer (MDRRMO) Geralyn B. Guibao, no reported injuries or structural damage have been reported as of 4 p.m. as local authorities continue to monitor the situation.
Based on initial assessments, no damage is expected, and no aftershocks are anticipated, PHIVOLCS said in its second bulletin of the quake issued at 3:58 p.m.
Jonabelle Arrezo, of Sitio Doot Poktoy in the neighboring municipality of Lanuza, told MindaNews over Messenger that shaking was felt for about 15 seconds, first a gentle tremor that gradually intensified, causing noticeable movement in her wooden house.
The last strong earthquake to hit Surigao del Sur was in December 2023, with a magnitude 7.4 quake. Only last October, a similar magnitude quake hit Davao Oriental, the province south of Surigao del Sur. (Queenie Casio / MindaNews)
